River Safety
The River of No Return – sounds ominous! This famous moniker is actually a nod to a time in history when boats could navigate down the river but could not get back up through the fast water and numerous rapids. Even so, the Salmon River – in all its beauty has challenges and inherent risks associated with backcountry and river recreation.
The river is a changing environment with high and low water, rapids, quick weather change, fire, tumbling rocks, blowouts, strainer logs, and exposed or submerged undercut rocks, etc. Be prepared and equipped to and exercise good judgment with your recreation.
- Tell someone where you are going, when you expect to return, and where to call if you don’t.
- Evaluate your skill level and experience and be sure it is equal to the river and the conditions. NEVER BOAT ALONE.
- Wear a Coast Guard approved type III – V, properly adjusted lifejacket at all times when you are in or near the river.
- Rafters in Class IV, or above, waters must wear helmets. Kayakers and canoeists must wear helmets at all times.
- Dress to swim and wear protective foot wear.
- Pack a first aid kit designed for wilderness survival.
LEAVE NO TRACE:
- Plan ahead for refuse transport and proper disposal.
- Respect wildlife.
- Leave what you find.
- Use caution with campfires when and where allowed and minimize impact.
- Be considerate of others.
Remember … Pack it in, pack it out – LEAVE NO TRACE!
