Riggins is the day trip headquarters but there are several outfitters that offer local 2-3 day trips as well. A typical journey begins up river after a shuttled drive to the designated launch site beginning your adventure on one of the most infamous stretches of the Salmon River. Prepare for intermediate “pool and drop” class II-III rapids (with a few challenging class IV – at certain water levels) with names like: Ruby, Lake Creek, Time Zone, Trap, Ladder, Lightning Creek and more. 

Come all summer long as a beginner or a veteran while Paddle Rafts and Inflatable Kayaks dominate the town! Begin with “Big Water Blowout River Festival” the first weekend of June when the river is high and cool then go again in July and August when the swimming is ideal and the fl ow is more moderate. Several outfitters offer trips through the second week of September!

The legendary Middle Fork of the Salmon River includes five and six-day trips offered by local outfitters ending in Riggins as the Lower Salmon section begins.

Our neighbors and CO-Chamber partners in White Bird are near the starting point for the three to six-day trips offered by our local outfitters that will take you on an adventure through the last leg of the Lower Salmon River. Here you will meet up with the Snake River at the confluence and then raft to the Heller Bar take-out near the confluence with the Grande Ronde River. Much of the 53 miles of the river, from White Bird downstream to the confluence of the Snake and Salmon Rivers, is roadless and accessible only by boat.
